Early this morning my outside unit began to make a screeching or whining type sound. I wasn't sure what was causing it but thought maybe its getting rusted as its been raining a lot(to let you know- I know hardly anything about an ac), but then realized well if that were the case it would have happened a long time ago. So I turned my thermostat up a little to give it a chance to be off for a while. When it came back on it was ok at first but within 15-20 min the whining started again. Any ideas on what it could be?

Sounds like the bearings are going out on the condensing fan. That's the fan that is running on the unit that draws the air across the condensing coils on the outside unit. If that is the case, you will have to have the motor replaced. Graingers sells them if you know someone that can put it in for you. If not, an A/C Repair Company will have to be called.

The fan motor bearings are starting to wear. They may have a place to oil bearings. You will have to pull motor out and see if you can find oil ports. Most made these days have sealed bearings. Oil ports most times have small red or yellow caps.

I'm going to take a guess...(lol)
But if your unit has any "belts" on it they could be going bad.
My car did the screeching noise before and I needed the belts replaced.
When my tires made this noise they had dirt on the break drums. So maybe there is a build up of dirt in the parts.
Maybe some parts need to be oiled.

Like I said...I'm just going to take a wild guess.
Good luck :))
