My old VHS collection

I was rooting through some old drawers (not the underwear sort) and found some of my old VHS format films. I was quite stunned at the variety in there, but most of all some of the seriously decent films amongst the dodgy.

Films such as:

- Carlitos Way
- The Last Boy Scout
- Deep Cover
- Trespass
- Swimming With Sharks
- The King Of New York
- An Innocent Man
- Sleepers
- X-Files The Movie
- Riccochet
- Cadillac Man
- Cliffhanger
- The Big Lebowski
- Fargo
- New Jack City
- Twelve Monkeys
- Brazil
- This is Spinal Tap
- The Wall
- Killing Zoe
- Out Of Sight
etc etc

does anyone else have a quality vhs collection boxed away (replaced by DVD), and if so which films are amongst them.

I've replaced a few VHS tapes, Star Wars, Eddie Izzard shows and a few Red Dwarf tapes... all were getting very worn!

I'm quite happy watching my other tapes until they actually need replacing.

the films which i can remember replacing are

- Armageddon
- Die Hard
- The Shawshank Redemption
- Saving Private Ryan
- The Great Escape
- Alien
- Fawlty Towers Collection

:D

i've only replaced my italian job vhs with the dvd which was worth it for the 5.1 surround sound and the extras. how much do videos go for on ebay.

This is a little off topic but i am trying to put my huge VHS collection onto DVD.
I came to a copy of Edward ScissorhanRAB made in 1990 and it has some kind of copy protection? My DVD recorder locks any recording. Copy protected in 1990
Anyone else come across simmular siduations

I too have lots of old VHS tapes that I would like to copy onto DVD so I can bin them all! I used my DVD-Recorder with the VCR plugged in the back to copy about half of them, but some came up with an error message about the tape being copy protected. I also tried plugging the VCR into the port on my PCs capture card, but 'Power Cinema' gave me the same error message. I'm sure there is software out there can override the copy protection on the VHS tape, but I have struggled to identify any. Anyone got any ideas? Help is much appreciated. I really want to get my Simpsons Collection onto DVD.

Cheers,

This will most likely be macrovision. Most DVD recorders won't allow you to record from a source (IE vhs - DVD - some sky box office films) that have macrovision in them.

Having said that some dvd recorders (My Liteon 5005b) for example can. But I think you'd have to google for how to do that I don't know if I'm allowed to say how on here.

My film collection was never all that big on VHS so little has been updated (Star Wars being the only thing I can think of right now) but my TV collection was much bigger and so far I've upgraded on the entire runs of Buffy, Angel and Babylon 5 as well as the final two seasons of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (I never bought the first five on VHS).

Same for me, my film collection on vhs wasn't that expansive (or very good if I'm honest...). The only things I've made the effort to upgrade so far have been Blackadder, Red Dwarf & Buffy.

The last one was mainly to get the limited edition box set of all the episodes though- too good to resist and it's the size of one of the vhs boxsets! Just need to get rid of the videos now and free up some garage space...

If it's something that's not yet been released on DVD - especially something that's not likely to ever be released on DVD - then you'll probably be able to get a few quid for it (I sold a couple of rare, obscure VHS tapes about a year ago on eBay for around 20 quid each, but I think I was just lucky).

However, with more & more stuff coming out on DVD all the time, the demand for VHS is becoming less and less, and if the film is already out on DVD, you'll be lucky to get a quid for the VHS on eBay - which begs the question, is it worth the hassle of posting it there in the first place?

The BBC Dr. Who box set The Keys of Marinus, has one tape protected and one not: understandable but still maddening. Same problem with the The Flash pilot on VHS. Good thing it was on tv recently.
It's called Macrovision and can be bypassed with the right gadgets but who can be bothered? It's a sad fact of life that VHS collections are fragile, 4:3 and rubbish quality compared to DVD. Rare stuff gets transferred and old prerecorded stuff goes to the oxfam shop on the way to HMV.
