my old roomate wont return my property?

Do you have proof it's yours? Otherwise you have no claim to it as he/she can say "no, it's in my house, you can't take my bed'. It sucks but it's life. If you have a recipt for the bed that would go a long way toward keeping the bed.
 
when i moved out of my old house. my roomate / landlord is withholding my bed. He says he won't give me my bed back unless i pay him several hundred dollars. we never had any sort of written agreement of any kind

If you did not have a pledge agreement in which your stuff could be held hostage for non-payments, then the landlord is a criminal. Call the police, tell them you are a victim of extortion. You can also sue the landlord immediately for return of your goods. Depending upon your jurisdiction, you can also sue for your attorney fees necessary to collect that which is lawfully yours.
