My new T3

Well, I'm a total newcomer in the PDA world. I've went today to my local store and bought a Tungsten T3 Multilanguage. To tell you the truth, I don't need(or don't think I do..YET!) a PDA. I just wanted to get up to date with the technology of PDA. I have a desktop, a laptop, an ipod and I'm relatively up to date with technology. But I have no darn clue about anything related to PDAs.

So, I have a load of questions for you. Right now, my T3 is charging(been charging for 2 hours now, I'll keep it for 4 just in case) so I have time!

Alright. I bought a multilanguage one because they did not have the english one. What's the difference? Only ML having more then english? If so, does the languages take place? If so, can I dump them?

I still havent tested it or tried any program but what do you think is a MUST program(s)? Remember, I'm a student so I'd rather find freeware programs but wouldnt mind paying a couple of dollars for a VERY needed program...and I don't think I really need a PDA, it was more just for the heck of it.

For example, I'd LOVE to be able to have a map of my city. I live in Montreal, Canada. I looked around and did not really find much. Most of them are costy and are for the USA. I know Mapquest offers to download small maps of the region but it's really not clear. Any idea for this?

I bought the T3 today. Should I install the software that came with it or download the updated(if any) version on the net? Are there security issues I have to take care of? What exactly can/should I change, update in my T3 to be 'good going'.?

I have USB Bluetooth wireless network adaptor. It's a small thing that looks like a jump drive.
If I plug that adaptor in my USB drive, and click on the Bluetooth icon on my T3, will that give me internet? If not, what do I need more? Program? Hardware?

My head is hurting :p It's 2AM so I'm gonna go sleep and post my other questions tomorrow.

Unlike some other things, you don't alwasys "get what you pay for" with PDA software. You got A REALLY REALLY GOOD PDA.

However, there are lots of FREE softwares out there that actually do a pretty good job.

A freeware viewer for maps that's pretty darn good is "VFSi" and it's available from freewarepalm. It can crash on a T3, but not often and they're improving it constantly. A better one at $29.95 would be AcidImage from red-mercury - the best viewer period. The pro verson is $49.95 but I don't think you'll need the added features right away, and you can always upgrade later.

I use maps a lot, but HATE map programs. They're bloated, expensive and awful. I find maps I like and scan them, or download them from the web and edit them to either jpg or bmp and view them with AcidImage. AI is good because you can load a large image and "drag it" with the stylus, and zoom in and out - very cool for detail. VFSi will also do that to some extent and is very "crisp" in image appearance, especially on a T3.

I'm curious myself as to whether or not the newer T3's had the updated appsliprotate/statusbarlibrary apps needed for the landscape viewing (added compatibility with some apps). If you need them they're easy to get, and they're free too.

A good file manager is important - Filez is excellent freeware and version 6.2 is just out on freewarepalm.

Figure what you like most AND DISLIKE MOST, and then set about finding the software that's best for YOU in YOUR situation. For instance, don't spend $40 on a security application (encryption, etc) if what you really need first is to be able to WRITE PROPERLY on the darn thing . . . now you get my favorit "plug:"

make software called "TealScript," which for a newcomer OR a "seasoned pro" is a Godsend - it lets you "tweak" the graffiti to be more familiar to your handwriting. If you're going with a keyboard that's fine - but entering info with graffiti is often necessary even if a keyboard may be faster - in any case you're learning "graffiti 2" which is newer and differs slightly from "graffiti 1" on older handhelds. That's a break for you right there - you won't have to "retrain."

Beaming software and anything else you want is fun, but if that software is registered to your friend, 1) it won't last long on yours because the trial will expire, and 2) it's technically illegal to share stuff that's "commercially licensed;" you'd eventually have to purchase a copy under YOUR hotsync name to keep using it.

Doing a SEARCH on these threads is very helpful as a lot of questions have been asked before and answered extensively - this particular forum has the "best and brightest" in my opinion and people are always ready and willing to help, especially if they're "new and different" questions. As for old familiar ones, they're ok too . . .but that's what the search is for. If you can't find what you're looking for there's plenty of help to be had here!

WELCOME!! Check out freeware palm and try looking through the categories - I've found better freeware on there than some commercial stuff I got "screwed on;" save your money until you know exactly what you need, or you'll end up dumping more than the T3 price in software you don't use often enough to be worth it.

I've jumped on my horses too fast and posted the message. I shouldve searched first. Was trying NOT to fall for the temptation of turning my T3 on before the 4 hours charge! And I made it:p Charged it 4 hours and now, I set it up and all is smooth running!

I installed ALL(literally) the software essentials that comes in the CD knowing that I'll probably "delete"(I presume we can delete on a PDA!) most of them.

I'll go and download the programs you suggest me and will see what I really need. Then, I'll pop a few dollars in those I really need :)

Sorry to pop again a question, that I beleive is pretty simple.

I'm trying to understand the bluetooth feature of my T3. Basically, I want to connect my T3 to the internet.

I'm wondering if something like this BT adaptor plugged in my desktop USB port would allow me to connect my T3 using my desktop connection?

I was told that to get internet on my T3 from a computer, I'd need a wireless router. I already have a router, but it's not wireless. So I'd rather keep that one...

So is the BT USB adaptor enough? Would it "send internet" to my T3 if I'm near it?

Or do I need a wireless connection from a router to do so?
If so, is there bluetooth adaptors that could be plugged in a USB port and "emit" a connection?

Let me second what PTL said in Welcoming you to the community. Glad you decided to join us. I'll see if I can point you in the right direction regarding the BT issue, but someone else like PTL might have to expound further.

You should be able to connect to the Internet via bluetooth with your T3 connected to your PC. You'll most likely need a broadband connection, and you may have to set up some settings on your BT adapter. It depends on your brand probably.

As for the T3, you just need to connect it to the BT adapter. There's a config applet for this, just search for BT devices and connect. PTL will have to go from here if there's anything else. The wireless router the guy told you about would be for WiFi. You'd have to pay $130 for a WiFi card. Don't do it unless you need to roam all the way around your house.

PROGRAMS:
I have several places I go for programs. You can usually get most any program on a trial basis, and there is TONS of freeware on the net. AvantGo would be a great way to download webpages to your device for offline viewing. That was one of my favorites.
