apartment- please help? So here is the deal.

My girlfriend & I moved into our apartment about a month ago. The landlord has stated that the neighbors have complained of the smell of cat urine coming from our apartment.

Now, we personally haven't thought that the smell of urine was that strong- except once, when we were changing the litter box and were washing it out with water- whew, that was bad. But maybe we just grew used to the smell? Either way, there must still be a problem because the neighbor came up to us and told us that it was really bad.

We scoop the litter out once a day, and we change the litter once a week. I'm not sure what else we should do to eliminate the odor. Should Febreze or something else do it? Where should we spray? And how is the smell getting to the neighbors anyway? Obviously, I don't expect to find the answer to all these problems, but any help would be much appreciated!
Graham H, you didn't answer my question. Your response was unnecessary. While I appreciate your concerns, I do not feel it was constructive. And I would rather try to fix the problem rather than getting "rid" of my pets. You do not just abandon living animals.

I am concerned about my neighbors' comfort, which is why I am questioning how to resolve this problem.

You will have to do a thorough clean with an enzymatic cleaner from the petstore, remember to do the walls as well.
Some things to remember:
Unaltered cats, male ones, normally spray - that scent is far stronger than anything else - if you have unaltered cats, please do their health a favour and have them sterilised.
If your litterbox smells bad, that's a clear indication that you need to wash them out far more regularly - that smell can be causing your cats to avoid it (their sense of smell is far more honed and sharp than ours, and I am sure4 you would not want to use a toilet that smelt like that) Scoop daily (it just takes a few minutes), and wash weekly, I find that way there is not any bad smell.

When you are done, time for the acid test....invite the neighbours, and use their sense of smell to tell you if there are any areas that you have missed.

PS, I would be more worried about the cat's comfort than that of the neighbours. THis is not an ideal situation for the cats, so see if you can bring it up to standard, and keep it there, they'll be far happier that way.

Sounds like you are doing your best to keep the odors down.

Some extra suggestions that you could try are:

putting baking soda in the litter box (it helps absorb odors)

or you can purchase the kind if kitty litter that already has it in it

I found that the clumping type of kitty litter didn't smell as fast and didn't track all over the house.

Does your cat always use the litter box?

Is your cat spraying (leaving it's scent mark) on your furniture and floors or walls?

Is your cat and indoors only pet or does it go outside?

If it goes outside it might be doing its 'job' where it will make the neighbors smell it.

You can place an open container (cup or bowl) of vinegar on top of your fridge or a counter top, vinegar helps remove odors in the air.

Maybe your neighbor is just someone who like Graham H just doesn't like cats and is trying to make you get rid of it??

Do you have friends or relatives who would answer you honestly if you asked them to come over and tell you if they can smell anything obnoxious?

I hope you find a way to resolve your problem.
