My N95 slider is scuffing up the keyboard area

I haven't ventured to go any further than replacing the back case on my N95, but I am now noticing scuff marks appear at the top right corner of the keypad area (when the slider is open). I don't have the slider wobble (pressing down the corners of the slider when closed does not move slider), but I'm thinking the right side rail might be lower than the left. Not exactly what route I should take to remedy the problem myself. Ideas?

yeah this is a known issue at nokia.

i spoke to a rep at the chicago store and i didnt even mention anything about it, and he said somthing about it to me (kinda strange, i was asking about the wobbly slider deal and he brings this up out of the blue)

basicly, if you got one with a "tight" slider its gonna scuff there...lame..

so you decide....either wobbly slide or scuff marks.....

I guess I'll stick with the scuffs

I thought of inserting a layer or two of tape underneath the display but doing that may end up doing more harm than good.

Concerning how bad the marks are, it extends the full width of the #3 key. Scuff looks like it is slowly removing the sparkly layer.

the scuff is caused by the LCD ribbon cable rubbing up against the keyboard area. ive known about this for a while and have tried different methods of remedying it, but the best thing is just sticking a small screen protector over that area. so im just gonna go buy the sheidlzone full body screen protector and hope its covers that area

^ That sucks. What poor judgement on Nokias part which allows the ribbon cable to scuff the body. Sheesh. For $750, nearly all the bases should be covered - that includes the wobble.

On my MIF it wiped away. So I assume its a plastic rubbing off. Now it barely happens and my slider is almost as loose as my gf's MBN.

Yeah, I realized this was happening almost right away. I have the scuffs, which generally wipe away with a soft cloth (i.e. my tshirt) fairly easily. One particular "streak" is a little heavier but still completely removed with more vigorous wiping. I'm assuming that eventually that area will have worn away over time to not be rubbing anymore. But then it seems when that friction is gone the looseness will ensue.

Bah!!!

its actually not bad. it blends in well. oh well at least i dont have to worry about anything (for now). damn nokia! ill just keep whipping out these "fixes" til its perfect! no way im selling this damn thing since it cost me 9 bills haha

looks like ill be buying the full body invisible shield afterall. just saw their template for the n95:

The click will always be the same. It the play in the slider aka wobble that increases. My MIF was tight, still perfect when open. The MBN had wobble in all positions. Did not loosen as time went on. I think everyones will wobble eventually to this point unless a fix is applied. Its not a big deal as only I notice b/c I was informed here on hofo. Everyone comment how nice the slide is and how beautiful the phone is. No one has ever said it wobbles.

Hey chopsu3i, if I applied a piece of clear tape along the length of the ribbon cable to reduce friction, do you think it might help? I haven't flipped the screen off to see the underside so I'm not sure if a layer of clear tape will prevent the ribbon cable from folding over properly.

Chopsu3i, great picture.

At first, i thought the scuff mark is caused by the tightening of the slider from the tape fix for the wobbly slider problem. I didn't notice it before but upon closer inspection, i see some light marks above the "3" key. Looking at the picture of the internal LCD ribbon, it makes sense that they are caused by the rubbing of the ribbon against the area where the marks are. Mine is very light and can only be seen at an angle. I can live with the light marks but not the wobbly slider problem which was more serious. I have to accept that the new N95 phone is not very well built but i still love the phone for all the functions packed into such a small form factor. It's quite a technological advance phone in my opinion. Hopefully, the next N95 version will improve on these shortcomings of the first release. In the meantime, keep the DIY fixes flowing, i really enjoy them.

oh no!

one problem leads to another, what next?.

I used invisable shield before, it has good protection, but it discolour after a while.

tried it. i also tried putting more tape to raise the ribbon so it wouldnt hit the keyboard when sliding, this works partly, but as soon as you slide the slider down to reveal the music keys it has no effect. so the best solution i figured was just putting a screen protector over the affected area. theres no slide issues with the screen protector on either so you wouldnt have to worry about that.

Looking at the LCD ribbon area, i understand now why the right side of the slider will become loose as it has to accomodate the constant movement of the ribbon when sliding up and down. Left side is ok as there are no movement of parts there. Could this be the reason of the wobbly slider issue?

i didnt use the full shield yet. i actually ordered it prior to doing any "fix". this is just temporary until i get the actual shield because im paranoid to open the slider when its getting scratched up.
