My mother owns a two flat apt in Chicago. One of the tenants has been dodging her and hasn't payed the rent. He won't answer the phone, he doesn't show up to the apt but for a few hrs at night and she hasn't been able to get a hold of him. She is worried bc she doesn't know what to do. She's only had possession of the building for a year so she's still unfamiliar with what her rights are in this situation. Supposedly she heard he can stay there without paying rent for 3 months by law, is this right? When is she allowed to serve him with an eviction notice and how long after that may she evict him? Unfortunately no lease was ever made, it was on a month by month basis.
