My microphone is picking up a humming sound and a high pitched whine?

Im a newbie at audio recording/editing :)

I'm trying to record myself talking and add in music with it too as a test project. When the music track plays, nice and clear, everything is great with the world. The vocal track is a different story. When the segment of my recorded voice starts to play, there's almost a "thud" where you hear a humming sound and a very high pitched whine. Is there a way to eliminate this? I have seen amateur home recordings where this is not present, how do they get rid of it?

P.S. I'm using garage band with an external microphone

I've always had trouble with external mics on Garage Band. The other gentleman could be correct about the frequency option; also check the moniter option. It could even be something as simple as the mic being too close to the computer, or the mixing board; if you're running through one.
One more thing could be if you're using a low impedance microphone with a high impedance cord, or vice versa. This would cause a screech when played through an amplifier.
Best of luck.
