My little girl has a crush on Gabriella from High School Musical and I'm...

...afraid (see details)? I'm afraid that if she makes any comments about it at school that she is going to get made fun of. She's only 5 and in kindergarten, but at home I hear her say things to her sister like she wishes she could kiss Gabriella, and she says that she is in love with her.

When I hear her sister (who's 7) say things about boys like "Joe from the Jonas brothers is my boyfriend" I joke around and tell her she shouldn't be thinking boys are cute because she's still my little girl. But I don't know what to say to her sister because I don't want to make her feel ashamed or anything. When she said something this morning I just laughed and said "you're goofy."

But I wonder if there's a way I can tell her (without giving her a complex) that it's okay to think girls are pretty but she shouldn't say things like that at school or to other kids because they might make fun of her? Or should I just leave it alone? I don't want her to feel bad or wrong at all but I know kids can be very very mean and that worries me.

As a person who's been insulted both by kids at their school and by her mother I had to answer this question.

You know, it sucks when your classmates or children/teenagers your age make fun of you but what truly hurts is feeling that your own mother is disappointed in you in some way.

Leave your daughter to freely express herself and hope for the best. Be a good parent but .. be her friend first.
