anti-virus accountable or sue them? I spent about $75 on my 'anti-virus internet suite' (2010 version). I have it scheduled to get updated daily and run at 3am. Two days ago my son tells me that the laptop isn't working. Well, this laptop is FUBAR -- before I started to work on it -- I couldn't even open Task Manager. I keep getting 'fake' messages saying that I don't have the proper permissions to open/start/close whatever program/service/etc. When I try to run Super AntiSpyware, or Malware Bytes -- the 'virus' either won't allow me to begin to run it, or if I can get it to run, it will (within 30 seconds) shut it down (as if I ended the process in Task Manager). 10 hours later (including 3+ on the phone with 'tech support') I've been told that they can not help me. I should mention that I can not get on the internet with the laptop -- The RCP, DHCP, and DNS services will not start (even if I try to do it manually). My warranty just ended at the end of July 2010 (and its now Sept 8). I can't use the System Restore option (which is where I need to go to get back to 'factory default settings'). So -- Antivirus company said they couldn't help. The manufacturer of the laptop said they don't stock the rescue CDs after 3 years and that I'm out of luck. They suggested that I purchase a copy of Windows 7 and just wipe the hard drive and install Win 7 and then try to install all the drivers. UGH! So, my question (sorry I had to rant and rave a bit) - Can I hold the Anti-Virus company accountable for any of my expenses regarding repairing this laptop? I'm going to call customer service tomorrow and see what they say. At the very least, they need to refund the $19.95 I paid to talk to Customer Support and then the $75 I spent when I purchased the "Anti-Virus Internet Suite" (FYI -- the product I'm referring to is CA Internet Security Suite 2010)
OK maybe "sue" was a bit strong. I'm just pretty frustrated because I spent the money on what was supposed to be a "iron clad" product and scheduled it to run daily, etc. I held up my end of the agreement, so its just frustrating when something like this fails and I end up on the loosing end of it. As for shady sites -- I have parental limits on it b/c he uses it at home and at school and the school has more stringent blocks than what I had set. So, OK -- "sue" is probably not a good word to use -- but I think you get the point. I need some coffee....
