My Koi fish won't eat its food am i doing anything wrong?

I just got a Koi fish and its pretty young and i put it in a tank with half of the tank filled and cold water with a light over the tanks. He wont eat or do anything, but just stay under a shell...im wondering if im doing anything wrong....and also how much food am i suppose to feed him??
answers please?
