My Jeep Wrangler YJ 4wd Light sometimes stays on?

once i put the gear back into 2H from 4H or 4L, the light still shows "4wd" sometimes it goes off after i change the gears or go in to reverse, but sometimes it takes like a few minutes, why doesn't it just turn off right away.

the light will stay on until the transfer case releases the front axle, my jeep cherokee does the same thing
