My iPhone seems to be "locked"!?

I'm unable to use it! i even held the "home" button for some seconds. And STILL nothing. is it the battery?

Is there a trick to "kick it on"?
It's a 3G. And Im still receiving emails thru my phone. I just cant use the touch screen.
