My iPhone screen is completely smashed, but the phone works fine. Now what?

Sign up for a genius bar appointment at your local apple store and see if you can get it replaced. Be polite and respectful to the representative and if they're nice you'll get a free screen replacement out of it.
 
So long story, my phone was run over by a car and the screen is smashed all over. However, the phone works perfectly still...crazy. What should I do about this though?
I shouldn't have to get a whole new phone because it's just the screen. I know the apple care doesn't cover it, but can apple just fix the screen for me? how much would this cost? I don't seem to be getting answers anywhere else. come on, there must be millions of people who have smashed their iphone screen...
