My iMac stays on blue screen with spinner?

Hello, I recently tried to down load updates to my imac. When I went to re-start my computer the screen shows a blue back ground with a grey square in the middle that shows
Mac OS X and there is a spinner. I tried re-booting holding down shift and nothing. Please Help :)
