my ibook g4 won't seem to work with apple cinema display 20 ?

I have an ibook g4 but i decided to get an apple cinema display monitor to go with it. i have bought all the correct adapters and converters for it and i know the screen works as i have tested it with my dads macbook pro (plain silver). i have no idea why the screen won't show an image ! it comes up in the menu bar when it is connected and the usb works as the mouse (plugged into the monitor) works in my computer! PLEASE ANY IDEAS. have i bought the wrong screen, is the adapter faulty ?! I don't know any suggestions ?! xx
