Hi. My husband just had his 5th back surgery on July 12th. He had a fusion in 07. Great that your husband is getting around well. Sorry he is having so much pain today and hoping that it gets better each day. I don't have any great ideas for you, but just wanted to let you know that I understand what you are going through. If the vicoden isn't taking care of the pain, you might want to touch base with your surgeon. My husband was given pain meRAB and muscle relaxers which seemed to work together.
Best to you and him. By the way my husband is doing great, back to work 3 days a week after less that 4 weeks. He will always have issues with his back, but we make the best of it.
Did you husband go thru the normal treatment prior to deciding on surgery such as medication; physical therapy?
Who is doing his surgery? Is it an orthopedist or neurosurgeon? Is the doctor's specialty in the spine?
I have been thru 6 surgeries. The surgeries ranged from a laminectomy for herniated discs to a decompression for stenosis to putting in harrington roRAB in my neck/upper back for kyphsois and roRAB in my lurabar region and being fused.
With each of the surgeries I personally knew surgery had to be done. It was the last resort. I had no regrets about the surgeries I went thru.
My problme was that after each surgery a new problem arose.
I wish you husband the best. I also went into surgery with a positive attitude and that helped get thru surgery.
let us know how he does. he and you will be in our prayers.
Its been awhile now 7 weeks this past Monday!!. He is still in lots of pain but starting to see some improvement (the stitches all came out) on his stomach he can go in the pool now, yeah. But we are having so much rain! guess no pool.
He is on vicoden, and neurotin for nerve pain. He is walking as much as he can. No fusion has started yet, bummed but Dr says it takes minimum of 3 months and up to 6 months for fusion. We have also heard it can take a full year before he feels like himself again, so who is he now?? jk.
Just wanted to give an update and see if anyone out there is going through the same.
Yes, he tried physical therapy, injections, medication. This is his last resort as nothing has helped the pain. It will be his 3rd surgery. First one was a laminectomy, then a idet, and now spinal fusion.
I am just so afraid of the outcome, and his recovery.
It sounRAB like your hubby is right on course with his healing. Your surgeon is right. 3 months is early to see healing/fusion. 6 months is more the average. And it does take a full year to heal. Remeraber it was MAJOR surgery.
This is a tough one!! He is not one to sit around, getting very boring for him he has been home since March and surgery was in August. Any suggestions?
He still has so much pain in his back and his legs, the stomach is very much improved.
My husband is doing great!!! He had the surgery yesterday morning and today he is up and walking the hallways Lots of pain but that is to be expected double surgery stomach and back. Hoping to come home on Thursday.
My husband came home from surgery already!! only 2 1/2 days in the hospital. They say he is doing great, but the pain is just outrageous. He is taking vicoden every 3 hours, any other ideas? He is walking great with a walker.
Will keep you all posted as to the recovery I know plenty of you are where I was just last week so worried about the surgery. Now its time to recover
Is your hubby in therapy? Water therapy would do alot to help him with the recovery and the pain.
Is your hubby into handicrafts? Or suggest that he hook a rug for you for the floor. I read my way through the better part of the library I think. My next door neigrabroador was a librarian and she would bring me bags and bags of books. How about doing a geneology search? Just a thought.
