My HTC hero runs remarkably slow and I have little to no apps on it...?

Is there anything I could do to fix this problem? I read something about updating the ROM or something like that but that requires erasing all the data stored on my phone. I was wondering if I had any other options to try before I took that step. Thank you ;)
