My honda just started chugging?

I drive a 1997 Honda Civic CX coupe, manual transmission.

For some reason, it's started chugging. Mostly when I switch gears, it starts to shake a little bit, as if I was trying to drive it too slow in a high gear.. only i'm not. Also, I believe it usually idols at 1500 rpm's and it idols at about 1000 now. It just seems very touchy. The oil isn't low at all, that's all I've checked. I haven't checked anything else yet, it looks like to check the manual transmission fluid you have to undo a bolt or something?
This problem happened once before, less than a week ago, today its complete shit, and my engine light came on, and stayed on.
I don't know much about cars. I just got mine a few months ago!! Anyone have experience with this?

(it would mean a lot if people who actually had experience with this kind of thing would help me out, instead of a bunch of people saying "I don't know, it could be this or this or this or this..." That doesn't really help me. I just want to know if it's something that could be easily fixed in the garage. I don't want to drive it anywhere if I don't have to)
I don't know how to be more accurate than that? I'm sorry I don't know how to explain cars very well, if I did I feel like I'd know how to fix the problem myself.
You know when your car starts chugging a bit when you're driving it in too high of a gear for the low speed you're going? It's doing that, but when I'm just driving fine. Like it's about to stall or something. Usually just after I switch gears, but when its just idoling, like when i'm not driving, it idols irregularly too.
