My GODDAMNED car. Life is a piece of shit.

The computer broke...

And who said this? If the actual board is still in one piece, you might want to consider cheaper solutions. There are shops that will rebuild the boards on most cars for around 250. And I own a 2002 that craped a CPU so I know that price.

And make sure its the CPU before you replace it. I made that mistake, and it was a wiring issue. I had a short in the wiring harness that reads the crank sensor and the jeep wouldn't drive over 30 MPH.

Well actually I haven't ran a vehicle on the same plug wires for that long, but I've owned a couple vehicles (at least) that hadn't had the plug wires changed for about that long. The last one was my '90 Astro, and I never noticed a difference when I changed the wires, even though the old ones did look like shit, and a couple of them came apart as I was removing them.

Darkling, I'm with lee on this one. Be careful about what you get changed on your car. Get a second opinion, preferably, if the first guy says it's going to cost that much to fix it. I've heard lots of stories of mechanics screwing people over because the customers had no clue what the problem actually was.

mdot: Any updates?

Mdot, Wow! What a cute little engine :D

I bet two and a half of them fit inside mine.

All teasing aside, wow, that engine bay looks effed up. I've never worked on a European car before.

Ok, so my brother was putting in the key and tumbler yesterday, so that he could start it to get it ON the ramps.

Well, we bought the part, ($30), and he was putting it in. He even got it to start. Then when it was started, the key never turned back like it's supposed to do after you start it. So he found THIS part that's cracked.

My question is: How much is this fucking part to replace, if the crack even makes a difference?

My digital camera is out of batteries, so all I have it a webcam. Pictures are hard to make out, especially up close.

Thanks, guys. :happysad:

You grab trinket stuff like that from salvage yards usually. Salvage yards and ebay maybe.

Times like these I glad I have a Camaro, there are more camaros getting parted out everyday, so replacement parts are easy to find. Im not sure exactly what your car is, but you may be able to get by with a replacement from any other car form the same company, or cars from the same time period, etc.

Buying a random part like that new is going to be hard if not impossible. THe upside is, a salvage yard/ebay will cost you a pittance for your trouble to find it. A salvage yard would probably charge you $10 if he wanted to cheat you.

I need to know what it's called. I can't go anywhere and ask for something by describing it, lol.

I plan on doin the junk yard thing.

I'm beginning to think that my brother-in-law doesn't really know what he's doing. He's just kind of guessing. I'm about to just say "fuck it" and call a mechanic.

You can take your brother in law to a salvage yard and say you want to go find the part yourself, and then you can take apart a Jetta of a similar model year and just get that part yourself. You don't need to know what it's called.

I can't view those pics because I'm at work right now, however, I'm certain you can get the cylinder to rotate with a screw driver and a little tape. I don't know how good you cousin is, but he kinda sounds like a bit of a clutz. Plastic get brittle when it gets old, but damn, he has almost caused half the problems that you have.

I suggest you start trying to work on this car your self. Its nothing like what you think. 1.) see broke part, 2.) remove broke part.3.) replace broke part.

The only added steps are removing extra things. If he has been working on this car for a wile, he (like most friends that aren't being paid to fix a car) will start to get into a hurry and cause other parts around the repair to break. I have seen it and done it myself.
