My fully charged MyTouch 3G Slide died after 8 hours of not touching it!

How Tragic! Whoever built the Android OS, PLEASE seek new ways of preventing such nonsense from happening. My MyTouch 3G Slide was fully charged at 8am this morning and when i returned home at 630pm where i didnt touch it for a whole day and the batter died. Isn't that something?

WOW! No Wi-Fi was on, no synchronization, nothing. Fully charged and i left it on my couch and it died when i got home. It wouldnt even turn on. Android, if you wanna compete with the Blackberrys and the iPhones of the world - You have to create better battery life. The OS is just a battery hog. The ironic thing is, i wasnt even using the phone. Just the Android OS alone screams battery KILLER!

Um sorry to tell you this bud, obviously you have a bad battery. And how did you come to the conclusion that it was the OS at fault? Ohh that`s right, I remember you.

lol some people r better off staying away from android. :-) u won't ever grasp what can kill a battery dude. the android OS, lol I guess having 160 apps on a 1 1ghz overlook processor giving me 8-9 hrs of use is just luck

Its not a bad battery. The same thing happened to my G1 and MotoCliq. I didnt touch it 4 a whole day and it died.

I was just praying it wouldnt happen 2 my MyTouch 3G Slide. I am starting 2 think anything Android related just loses power in less than 8 hours. If you touch and play with the phone then it'll only last 4 hours. I dont have any apps and all i do is text and the occasional light web browsing. My experiment came true...thanks ANDROID!

if ALL of your android devices are having this problem the only thing i can think of is maybe signal isnt too great where u are. if its constantly looking for signal then yeah this MIGHT be your issue. ive had this problem once when i had the G1. my job had the worst tmble reception ever, when i was placed in a different building with better reception my battery useage lasted longer

I dont get if this is a troll or a legitimate complaint, but obviously everybody isnt getting 8 hours of battery life max otherwise android would not be popular. There is obviously some issue specifically with you.

I live in Manhattan. And everyone in Manhattan has impeccable cell service. Its not looking 4 a signal. I love the Android Browser, but as an OS its just a battery killer. If you want, i can send you a video clip of the phone dying within 8 hours from me not touching it. I'll use my digital camera 2 record a very long clip for you. Just let me know.

Ok well then i dont know what to tell you. I get over 8 hours and i use it all day so you must just be very unlucky. Im using the evo. and i used the original mytouch. The mytouch would last me the longest of all my android phones sometimes making it two days on a charge.

Well, I'm gonna call bull$$$t on this one. I've not only done my own tests on 3 different brands of batteries to compare them to the standard batteries, but I've also tested this on two Android powered phones - the G1 and the Nexus One.

On the G1, if you turn off all the stuff you've mentioned (WiFi, Syncing, etc), and don't have any apps installed, and just leave your phone on standby, you get a whopping 5 days out of a G1 and even more amazing 12 days out of the N1. These figures are remarkably close to the manufactures claimed standby times of 130 hours and 290 hours respectively. The reason I had slightly lower times is probably because I had to keep waking the phone up to check if it had ran out of power yet.

Since Android 1.6, we've been able to see exactly what is using the power on an Android phone (Menu -> Settings -> About phone -> Battery use). On my phone "Android System", which is the OS by the way, has used 6% of the total power that has been used so far since I unplugged the phone. Why not grab your phone when the battery is low and do the same and see for yourself what is actually using the power?

I've used a G1 for nearly 18 months, and on a normal day I nearly always have more than 50% battery when I plug it in to charge over night. That's in line with what most people say (you should charge it every night while you sleep, and why not?).

Due to the fact that you claim the battery ran out on both of your Android phones in the same way, yet everyone else here has a different experience, I put it to you that it's YOUR use of the phone that is making the battery die. Either an app you have installed that is keeping the phone awake or processing something, or you using it way more than you claim, or some setting you've set (like setting the screen to never turn off) that is at fault.

Given your experience seems extremely rare, you cannot blame Android for this, as if it were Android then every Android phone on the planet would have the same issue.

Ive recorded an 8 hour video clip showing that the battery is at 100% and then dies a few hours later after just leaving it on my desk. Does anyone want to see?

Does it show your phone next to a clock and speeded up so it just takes a minute to watch? If so, sure, put it on YouTube if you want. But it doesn't really help.

Nobody said it doesn't happen for you. What we did say is that it's not Android to blame that's the part we didn't believe. It is something else like an app. Why not take my suggestion of looking at the Battery Usage information in the settings when your battery is low to see for yourself what is ACTUALLY using the power. Why not post a picture of that screen here so we can help? That would be much more use than a video just showing your phone die.

Extorian is spot on with this thread.

Show us the battery usage screen. Also download Spare Parts. Go to battery history-> partial wake, and take a picture of that.

Then we can debug this for ya.

i have a bad, no, very bad battery in my G1. it overheats when charging, getting up to 190+ degrees! one night i left it charging for 10+ hours and the top screen cracked and scorched my sim card. i have about 25 apps, i do heavy txtng/web browsing all day, wi-fi, etc and i still get 10-12 hours on a battery. 3% of which is used by the OS. Just return the phone, and get a nokia from 98, the 5100 series, and call it a day.

Why did you get the battery swapped? Or buy a new one? If it's heating up that much it is obviously dangerously damaged or faulty.

I don't understand your recommendation though. You say you do heavy texting and web browsing all day, and get 10-12 hours on your battery. That's pretty amazing by any smartphone standard. So why advise to get a Nokia?

He was being sarcastic.

The nokia reference was like telling the guy to F off.

He was saying even with that horrible battery he still got that life from it.

yeah sorry i was being an azz. that guys a tool. i did get the battery swapped and the charger 2 times already. now they say i have internal problems with the phone yet they swap phones cuz the top screen is cracked, even tho they admitted the overheating battery caused it.
