My fuel gauge in my Dodge Neon isn't reading properly. What could be wrong?

When I top my car off with gas the needle shows full, but after a couple miles the needle shoots down to Empty....What could the problem be? The car is a 1996 Dodge Neon with a SOHC motor if that makes any difference! Thanks!
