My friend is going to jail how do i make them feel better?

my friends going to jail Thursday and he is really depressed i don't know what i should say or do to make him feel better any idea. its for stealing money by the way.
 
Tell him to learn his/her lesson and not do it again. I mean if you're that stupid you deserve to be depressed. I'm not trying to be mean but jail is not supposed to be a vacation.
 
Break it down for him into a manageable chunk, like

"look its only 20 weeks / 65 days. "

Then remind them what they'll be out in time for ie

"You'll be out to celebrate my birthday /Xmas" etc

Tell them you will visit & write regularly & keep them up to date with everything. Plan things to do once hes out - trips, parties, anything that he can focus on. Also do some research into places that would be willing to employ him when hes out so he's not panicking about survival.

Remind him "look, once you've served your XX days, its done & u never have to do it again".
 
Talk to them about all the emotions they are overcoming...
See if you can relate to how theyre feeling in any situation you have already experienced.

Dont count down the days till they get out of jail or count years or anything.... this can make the wait longer.

Read them your personal things...
Nothing is better to hear about other exciting things if you havent any in your life..
read them your diary entries, your favourite poems. show them your favourite music... things they dont get to experience at the moment...
I also dont know if they allow you to do this. But you coudl always bake them a cake... or make them something that youve made especially for them... if you knit, sew or crochet? Maybe your good at crafts or computers...?
