Crikey a Wild Ski Bum

We were hiking up a mountain in the Colorado Rockies, and below treeline we stepped on a small mound of soft dirt and twigs, and lots of small bugs, probably about the size of ants came out, and started biting/stinging us.
I never got a good look at the bugs, but each bite/sting was more painful than a bee sting, the pain lasted for probaby three hours, and only left a very tiny mark on our legs. The bugs must have been flying or jumping, because I never saw any on my skin, and I was only attacked on my shins.
Supposedly there are no fire ants in Colorado, and I've always worn pants since. What are these devil bugs?
