according to the commentary on the dvds he is an octopus. they drew only 6 legs because 8 was too bulky

Don't be fooled by the name people. The creators of the show said on the dvd that he is an octopus, not a squid.

Well, according to SponeBob SquarePants, the official guide, Squidward is an octopus. You'd think he was a squid because of his name, though. It is really confusing.
