I just changed my BETA fishes water and now like every 20 seconds or so he pokes his head out of the water and takes a gulp of air. It seems like he's holding his breath in the water and breathing the air or something??? What the hell is going on???

bettas (commonly misspelled beta) are anabantoids. that means they can breath air but they do not use it as their primary source of oxygen so if he does it frequently i suggest getting an airpump and airstone.

Everything that everybody else has said is correct. I just thought that I would add, if you do add an air stone to the tank make sure that it doesn't cause to much of a current or it will stress the betta out.

First, no swearing. Second, a Betta is a Labyrinth fish, so they a a special organ that lets them breathe air. So no air tight lids.

That's normal. I used to have a Betta fish :(

Its normal.
BTW every day, put a mirror beside the tank for 5 minutes. It gives them exercise. Their "cheeks' will "puff up" and they will look like a lion- lol. They think its another male betta and they will protect their territorry.
