My fish is dying.. what shall I do?

I have a betta splendens. He is in a very bad way. He barely moves, his eyes are puffy, and he is leaning to one side. All his fins have deteriorated and he has lost his vibrant colour.

I have been doing all the right things, I've spoken to the aquarium store many times and looked up what to do on the internet, I've put in fish tonic and fungal medicine and nothing has worked.

The poor guy is on his last legs. Should I give him back to a pet store, or put him out of his misery, or what shall I do???

How long have you had the fish? They only live up to 2 years and it sounds like old age. Have had many Betta's and they do go through their last weeks as if having some mystery disease.

It all sounds to me as the result of potentially bad water quality - the lethargy, pop eye, bacterial infections such as fin rot etc.

It does sound like your fish is pretty far gone and its unlikely that a pet store would take in a dead fish unless you only got it a few days ago. Never flush live fish!

Make sure its tank is warm - Bettas need a heated filtered tank - and try and treat with an anti-bacterial medication (rather than anti-fungal, but don't mix medication!) and make sure your water quality is in tip-top condition.

Also, healthy Bettas can live over 3-4 years, I've had a few 4 year old boys, 2 years is average for a bowl-kept Betta though.

right you need to be fast look at the fish if they have white spots it means they r all infected and you cant do any thing but try and look at them and get all the ones with out the bubble under there neck it sound like to me if one fist is infected and is pasing it onall-soo when one fish is ill all the other fish will try and kill it i no it sounds bad but it so it cant sperd you can tell witch fish are ill because the other fish will bechasingg it around and pushing it if youdon'tt hurry they will ALL die! p.s. sorry about the spelling and good luck do it asap! xoxoxox

Probably the water or the food wasn't right for him. Yeah, give back to a pet store if they'll take him. If not, he might be dead by tomorrow. 'Bury him under a flower to make it grow and what ever you did to that fish, like the kind of water you used or food you gave it, don't do it again with another fish.
I use only drinking water for my fish, or rain water. Never tap water. You can if you let it sit a while but I prefer rain water if you can catch some.
I also use the water that drips out of the other side of the air conditioner . They are always healthy with that. I raise hundreds of fish but not more betas for me. They are killers and jealous of other pretty fish. My betta they killed my mollies in my big fish pond and only the big pretty ones. I got rid of the betta and will not get any more ever.
Try guppies next time. They're pretty and nice fish and easy to raise. and cheaper and they have a lot of babies. I love guppies a lot and I love platys and mollies, easy to raise and sweet non violent fish.
