I live in the center of a big city... I do like the handgun range, been there 1 time and loved it... Fired an HK 45,Glock 9mm and an AR 15 in 22 cal... Super fun time but I love shooting my air rifles at small game from far away even more so than I firing a hand gun.... So,should my first real gun be a handgun or a rifle????? I think I want a rifle but will I really use it that much???... Any bit of info will help... Thanks for your detailed opinionated answer... James

Go with a light caliber rifle. Check out the cost of ammo for your chosen caliber before buying the weapon. Make sure you can afford the ammo.

Enjoy shooting.

Find something in .22long rifle caliber. Ammo is cheap, almost no recoil, and overall a pretty accurate cartridge. Also, the firearms chambered in this caliber are also cheaper than their big bore counterparts.

You can find new .22LR rifles and pistols for about $300.

And to give you an idea how cheap .22LR can be, I usually pick up a carton of 550 rounds for about $8.

Where as 50 rounds of .40S&W goes for about $15.

My suggestions would be a Ruger 10/22 rifle. Or a Ruger mark III target pistol.

Smith&Wesson also makes some fine .22LR revolvers, but they cost a pretty penny.

just for target? i would get the handgun...if you want to hunt, rifle or even shotgun is the way to go. you can get a .45 with a nice scope on it and hunt with that too depending on what state you live in, but thats a bit expensive to take that to the target range
