I'm moving into the city of St. Louis mid-January and I am going to have access to a roof. I want to plant a garden up there-- it needs to be contained-- but i have ABSOLUTELY no idea where to even start. Can i start planting things in January? I like colors like purple, yellow, white and especially pink, I like tulips and love calla lillies, I don't really care about roses (although I like yellow and white ones). I want the garden to last a long time, I don't really understand the concept of different things growing at different times.. I want a garden year round! Any information will be more than I have now. Thanks!!

January in Missouri is no time for planting. Get with the local master gardeners or the university extension service and they can give you information on when the best time to plant in your area. Also get a good book on container gardening. Thats a great time to start planning your garden. Good luck.
