my first ducati???

thank you all for your comments. they are very much appreciated. i think im gonna go for it. why not??? you only pass this way once. what better way to do it than on a ducati??!!

Hey man, amen to that! You live once and that is it, all you got. Frank Sinatra said it perfectly in My Way...just give it a listen if you need some inspiration. Go out and live your life your way and keep us all posted...I'm sure the grin won't leave your face for quite some time, but if you can't say it hopefully you'll be able to type!

Go for it...be safe but have a ton of fun. Enjoy it man!

I'd say if you want the Ducati, go out and buy it. The 1098 is my first Italian bike and I love it. Although I've ridden others in the past and actually would still like to have an SV650, the throttle works both ways so if you ride it with some sense, you will learn to love it. Initially, it was harder for me to get used to the front brake than anything because nothing I had ridden before stopped as well as this bike does. Mine too has more play in the throttle than I would like, has been back for service once already and I think I'm starting to have that problem with the starter. I'll probably have them tighten it up again next time but I can live with it for now. One misconception I had was that it would pull like other twins I've ridden and in my opinion, it does not. This is most definitely NOTHING like a Harley, old Triumph, BSA or a Moto Guzzi either so after you get it broken in, you'll need to give it some stick and don't baby it so much. It will make riding it easier, smoother and more enjoyable. Mine seems happiest above 4-5000 rpm and I HATE riding in town or in traffic. Be patient, give yourself time to learn how it handles, brakes, accelerates, etc. and I think you will love it. It has its quirks but most "exotica" does. Just enjoy.

Respectfully,

Jet

"why not??? Because it is a BIG mistake! That bike will be MUCH less forgiving of mistakes in throttle application or brake application. If you have the money, then you can afford to get a 695 monster (a beautiful bike) and really learn to ride first. It will take many thousand miles to do so - then on to something bigger, and I don't mean heaver.

I've been riding since I was 13 (56 now) and have raced etc. and have something like 500,000 mi. experience with bikes, and when I stepped up to an s4r it took me at least 3000 mi. to acclimate. With a quarter turn throttle or less, and dialing in way over 100 hp, each little increment of throttle application means very significant difference than the last few degrees of twist.

Reconsider. Decisions have consequences

I respect your opinion and all...but where do you get a Monster 695 as a suggested alternative to a 1098? There are so many other bikes, even Ducatis, and that's the best alternative you got for the guy? I disagree.

By the way you can get maimed on a 695 just as easily...most likely to no fault of your own based on the way people drive their cars. Plus, someone else said it best when they talked about a 600 accelerating just as fast as a Hayabusa etc. All new bikes are fast, but this is the one he wants. You think a Monster is beautiful...it could be the ugliest bike he's ever seen.

Like I said, I respect your opinion, and your knowledge. I don't however agree with blanket statements like "it is a BIG mistake!" and "really learn to ride first. It will take many thousand miles to do so..." You could be right on or completely wrong. Just because it took you 3,000 miles to get acquainted with a bike doesn't mean it will take him the same amount of time.

I say take the requisite courses, get the license, BUY THE BIKE YOU WANT, learn the controls, hit the track and really learn how to control the bike without rushing into fast riding, and HAVE FUN.

Yup, and fun.
I have a 1098, 998, and a 2007 250 Ninja. Because its fun to ride.
I am selling my 250 to buy the new 08 Ninja 250. Check it out, vary cool.
