For $5000 you will have to settle for a car with high mileage. Before you buy your friend's car, make sure to check carfax report on the history of the car, it'll tell you if the car had been in an accident and also how frequently it had repairs done at the VW dealership. I also recommend having an independent certified car mechanic check this VW. For about $50 they can run a full diagnostic on the car and tell you whether or not this car needs things done like maintenance or repair. Lastly, just because you buying a car from your friend doesn't mean you can't negotiate. Always negotiate. If you decide to puchase this VW, offer $4400 and see where it goes. But don't get stuck on this one car, there are other cars out there on the market and due to bad economy, many sellers will be willing to come down in price significantly, especially if they lost their jobs and need the money.
