so i got this new car and it has a pretty huge exhaust thingy on the bak. i have a cold air intake or w/e, as u can tell i dont kno much about it. but i got pulled over today for ashing my cigarette out the window.. (pathetic) and the cop said my exhaust is illegal. why is it illegal? is it to big or something? what could make an exhaust illegal and how much to fix it cuz it obviously wouldnt pass smog then..(im in california)
well ACTUALLY i did NOT throw the cigarette out the window im not stupid, it was on the freeway second of all and i was JUST ashing, just the burnt paper ashes, if any embers fell off they prolly burnt out within seconds of hitting the high speed wind.

also i dont wanna take the exhaust off :-( and wont it not pass the visual part of the smog test? and how do i know if i have the catalytic converter

If the cop did not give you any sort of written or verbal reason the exhaust was illegal. I would ignore him. I agree with the other guy, hes probably pulling your dong. If its too loud.. did he measure the decibels? I doubt he stuck his head under your car to see if it had a cat or not. You can see if it has one, if you look under it towards the front of the car where the exhaust comes down from the engine you can see if its there or not. Use google to find a picture if you need to see what it is you are looking for.

I would assume that like most intelligent people, it probably had a "cat back" system installed. Meaning they only replaced the portion of the pipe after the catalytic converter. Which is perfectly legal, assuming its in accordance with local noise ordinances.

My nephew was told that too, but he never did anything about it. If the officer didn't give you a ticket then don't worry about it. I seriously doubt that the resonator at the back has anything to do with your smog devices.

Second, you said your car is brand new, it has to have a smog device (even if its used) you can not sell a late model car in California without a catalytic converter, its against state and federal law.

Next, if he gave you a ticket, he had to write down the Vehicle code that he's citing you for. So go here enter the violation code: http://www.leginfo.ca.gov/calaw.html

Why you don't get things clarified right at that very moment is beyond me. The cop said it was illegal. "In what way"?

Maybe too noisy. Maybe the wrong color. Maybe the wrong shape. Bloody hell. Maybe he was pulling your dong.

If it's too loud, it's illegal. A muffler shop can probably weld a stock muffler from a junkyard onto the car for less than $100 total in parts and labor. Once you get the car inspected with the stock muffler installed (I assume you got a fix-it ticket from the cop), the muffler shop can easily and cheaply remove the stock muffler and re-weld the louder muffler back on if you really liked the louder muffler enough to risk getting in trouble with it again (doing this is 100% illegal though, so beware and try at you own risk if you decide to do so.)

The muffler has nothing to do with emmisions, so the car would still pass a smog check with a loud muffler as long as the catalytic converter wasn't removed or modified when the rest of the exhaust was modified (normally people don't mess with the catalytic converter when installing an exhaust on a street car anyway.)
