Do i need to remove the fuel tank and carbs to remove the starter motor. this fault was intermittent at first, if i pressed the start button a couple of times then it would start, now it will not. the relay clicks with the start button, so i think it is the starter motor, it looks as if the starter motor has only two cables live & earth is this correct?
could it be that the brushes have worn in the motor? can these be replaced? thanks for any help .

Relay -
Single click - weak battery, dirty/loose battery connections, seized engine, starter motor problems.
Rapid clicking - defective relay.

What you describe usually indicates a faulty starter button switch or a loose battery cable.
First, be sure your battery is fully charged and the terminals clean and the connections tight.
If you get the same results with a fully charged battery, then jump the starter solenoid to see if the starter engages.

It the starter engages then the problem is a dirty or corroded starter button switch.
