Going by what I read, I am gessing you were driving, and eather you hit a curb, and caused damage, or something else happened. If there was something hanging down, My gess would have to be tierod end. Not alot of information though. You said you were driving strait, and tried to turn.
Now the real problem. If you did hit a curb, you have a 40-50% chance for a bent frame. I don't know what the car is, so can't realy give you an estimit, but they can get expensive. I will take a gess that you have a newish (10 years or less) car. They have subframes, and can be changed out in about 2 hours. The tierod ends can be replaced in about half an hour. The control arm prolly didn't break, as that would result in the tire falling off (or along those lines)
As for parts. Newer is more expensive. American cars are cheaper to fix. And a labor will run you $70-$100 an hour.
