You ought to file suit against him for being negligent in not providing protection against walk-outs. You worked hard serving a table and didn't receive your due compensation. That was through no fault of your own, rather it was the fault of management.

I currently work at a restaurant in Montreal and I recently had someone walk out on a bill. It wasn't as if I had neglected the table, I was taking another order and the guy took off after I gave him his bill without paying. It's not possible for me to be everywhere at once. My employer is insisting that I am on the hook for the amount? Is this legal? I know some restaurants have walk out insurance included in their insurance, but he claims he doesn't. Help!

no it's not legal for him to do that. Just say that you're not going to pay it, if you lose the job so what, it's not terribly difficult to find another waitering job. Trust me.

Your boss is an idiot if the circumstances are as you state them, I suppose he will also hold you responsible if someone spills a drink or passes gas as well.
I know here in the U S he wouldn't get away with it but I also know that here with jobs the way they are, most of us would just pay it...sad isn't it?

It is common practice actually... I would make him take it out of your check for your hourly and not pay it out of your cash tips that night, get a paper trail. tell him if he wants you to pay for it and he thinks its legal for him to do that, then you want a reciept... then you will have all the proof you need for court. If he won't then your problem is solved...
