My emissions light on my 2005 Honda accord came on yesterday.?

I have 39k miles on my vehicle. I checked the fuel door and fuel cap and it was closed properly. I'm not really good with cars, and was wondering if I should take it to the shop. Some people are telling me to wait a week to see if the light goes off after a few starts.
Will my vehicle get damaged if i delay going to the dealer for a week?
