My dog nearly got hit by a car today...?

He keeps escaping out of our fenced yard. It's happened twice this past week.
He's about a year and a half old, poodle/beagle mix.
I'm honestly scared to death since I live on a busy street..
The first time, he slipped out the fence when my dad was leaving and started running around on the neighbors lawn (he was excited from playing). I just answered Julie's question about escape artist dogs talking about this, haha.
And today, he saw someone across the street (I think) and pushed his way through when my sister was leaving, ran across the street at them, nearly got hit, then ran back into the gate when he was called.

It scared me to death. Nothing happened, he was fine. But I can't get the "what if" out of my head.
I was taking a nap at the time this happened and I just heard my mom screaming "KINGSTON!" and woke up and saw him running in the street. I just started bawling, honestly. It scared me so bad... I just feel horrible..

He's never done this before. I think it may be because I haven't been walking him as much (he gets regular exercise, just not as much as he used to) or maybe even spring fever, he's been loving outside lately, he always wants to be out playing. So he's getting regular long walks again, first thing..

So..what should I do? How do I train him to NEVER leave the yard unless I allow it and he has a leash on?

The weird thing is that I NEVER thought he'd ever run into the road. Cars and roads make him so nervous..Ugh. I just feel terrible..

Thanks for any answers. Sorry this is so long.
The gate is proper and everything, this all happened when someone was leaving and he just pushes his way through. He's just never done this before. And of course we're going to be more careful, but I just want to teach him to prevent any more accidents like this.
Sorry for the confusion..
