my dog just ate a battery but it has no mercury in it will he be safe still.?

No. Our answers won't change his life. Your actions will change his life. Every battery has the ability to leak corrosive material. Instead of wasting time on here sounding stupid, take your dog to the vet.
 
The battery will almost certainly cause an obstruction in his digestive tract apart from very possibly poisoning him too. Take your dog to the vet without any further delay. That is if you care for your dog at all.

Judging from the fact that you haven't already contacted the vet, and that you are wasting possibly valuable time mucking about with Y/As, perhaps you should consider whether or not you are a fit and proper person to have any kind of pet in your keeping at all.
 
Firstly, there are other things in batteries that can harm your dog.
I don't think this warrants taking the dog in though. Call the vet and talk about it. He's probably going to say the dog will poop it out just fine.
