Today I got my new dog, a collie, and tonight we put her on a duvet downstairs to go to sleep on. We were all in bed but I wasn't asleep and hear a whining noise from downstairs. It was my dog. When I go down, he's fine and he shuts up but when he's left alone he whines. I think its separation anxiety. He's my first dog and he's a border collie, 1 year old.

P.S. He's very friendly and active.

my dog used to do the same thing when i got him he was 3 months old though. i eventually found out that pets cant just be objects that you use when you want and throw them away at night (thats how they feel). also, i noticed with experience that they feel unsafe and weird in a new environment its best if the first few months he sleeps in your room atleast and then eventually when he gets more familiarized he'll just go off on his own and sleep anywhere. he stops whining when you come to him because he likes company. dogs are like kids. dont leave him alone at night it makes them really sad

he may have been spoiled wherever you got him from OR he may have had another dog or person to sleep with at night.
if you want him to stop, just leave him down stairs at night and put up with the crying
if you let him sleep with you he'll be even harder to deal with when he can't

Dogs are pack animals, you should let her sleep in your room on the floor, it will help.

Assuming he's house trained, I'd let him sleep on your bedroom floor, not downstairs. Otherwise he's just lonely at a time when he's trying to get used to his new home and family.
