My Dodge Spirit is making a grinding noise while accelerating until about 10 mph,

what could be wrong? Today while I was driving I noticed that my car began to hesitate when accelerating from a dead stop. Afer a while it became apparent that there was a grinding sound. It only does it up until about 10 mph before it accelerates as it always has... I don't want to put anymore money into this car than I have to as I will be buying a new vehicle this spring, but I need to keep it running...
I haven't checked the fluid level, could it just be low??
Can someone give me a little advice as to what I should do?
 
it is one of your tranny gears..probably first...this is a definate if your car is manual...you may need it rebuilt or this may jsut be the first gear to go....
