I have a 97' dodge ram. it has 287k miles on it and it has only had a new spark plug in it. It's been well maintained, however the past few weeks it has been making this stupid grinding noise and i have to throw it in 4 wheel drive to keep it from doing it up our hill (pretty steep). It does it on the highway when i pull out onto it. Only then and going up hills is when it does it. I dont know what coulld be wrong. It sounds like the gears are grinding against it, like when you shift too fast, but they're fine. Any suggestions on what it might be? I dont have the money to take it to get it checked out at a shop, so searching is the best way for me to find out whats up.
We've checked the transmission, and thats fine. What about the transfer case?
