My computer is infected please help.?

my computer shut down now I have a red button with a white x down on bottom of my computer in the blue bar. It pops up windows says your computer is infected with spy ware. you click on the link and they want you to buy there virus protection, antivirus pro 2009.
I dont want to spend any money so is there any way to remove this w/out spending?
