My cellphone got wet, but something was wrong with the battery when I took it out?

I have a samsung behold, btw. On the battery, (after I tried drying everything) I noticed some sort of white redish thing coming out of some sort of opening, it use to cover these two little gold closed holes. (Excuse my grade school explanations) I know (or at least have a stench, considering it didn't burn my skin or anything when I touched it) it isn't battery acid. But can replacing the battery of your phone after it got wet get the phone to work again???

As long as the white dot under the battery didn't turn red than it should be okay.
