My cat won't eat its dry food, and is complaining that it is hungry.?

I dont have enough money to buy the usual purina kitten chow that he eats, so I bought him the generic dollar store nutritional cat food, and he won't eat it. He complains about being hungry, but when I set him in front of the food he just sniffs it and walks away. I'm afraid he will stave, but I can't do anything because I have no money. What should I do?
Btw, I'm not poor I can afford the other stuff, but I don't get paid for another week. (for all of you insulting my financial status)
 
I agree with Lady Kelly. Taking on a pet is a huge commitment and it's not fair to the cat if you can't properly take care of it. Have you checked to make sure the dollar store brand of cat food offers the same nutritional content as Purina or other vet recommended brands? If not, your cat can suffer from malnutrition. Is that fair?

Personally, I would cut out unnecessary items from my grocery list to make sure my cat got the proper nutrition. Soda, ice cream, starbucks, hell, even the expensive toilet paper are viable options.

You need to seriously evaluate your shopping list or consider putting your cat up for adoption.

when he realizes(and he will) that you aren't going to give him anything else, he will eat. he won't starve himself. he just doesn't like it as much as the other stuff.

I don't know if I agree that you should surrender him to a rescue group. Many people are struggling to provide food for their own families including their cats. Cats will end up in shelters and what do you think they are eating there? Premium foods? They are eating what is donated which is usually dollar store generic foods. They are not getting annual teeth cleanings either in shelters. As long as people provide basic necessities of vaccinations, emergency medical care (or surrender in that case if they absolutely cannot provide the care) and food and water there is no reason why they shouldn't provide homes for cats. People that have tight budgets don't necessarily love their animals any less. Being unable to afford the best of everything does not make you an animal abuser.

Do you have a can of tuna? If so pour the juice on top of the food to get him to eat it. Try to earn the money to get his usual food ASAP. Return bottles, mow lawns, weed gardens anything that will get you the money to get the normal food.
 
Logan, if you don't even have enough money to buy Purina Kitten Chow, you need to give the kitten to a rescue group. It's one of the cheapest foods around and it's not fair to take on the responsibility of a pet when you don't even have $7 for a bag of food.
 
Cats are notoriously picky. If you switched foods on him that is probably why. He doesn't like what you're feeding him so he isn't going to eat it.

If he gets hungry enough he might eat the dollar store stuff but if he doesn't start eating you need to try something else or try SOMETHING to get him to eat.

Honestly....the person above is right. If you don't have money for cat food you aren't going to have the money for hundreds of dollars for vet care like vaccinations, dentals, sick care, spay/neuter, etc... Do yourself a favor and get him to a rescue group.
