My cat wandered off three days ago; how long before I should start to worry?

My cat is a typically indoor cat. She started going out to the garden about three weeks ago and was staying right around the house. Then, three nights ago, my son let her out at night and we haven't seen her since. How long do cats typically go wandering for and should I be worried? I have scoured the neighborhood and sent her pictures to animal shelters as a precaution.

You should have started worrying 3 days ago. She could have been picked up by another family, gotten injured, killed, etc. Start looking for her, post fliers, call around to shelters, etc.

You are asking for an opinion and here is mine. You should have been worried from the start. Remember you ask. I am not being rude but this is how I feel. I keep my cats indoors for this very reason. I want to know where they are all the time and if they are safe. I know for a fact where they are 100% of the time. This is the only way not to worry and wonder where you cat is and if it will ever come home. You ask for an opinion and this is mine.

Call the closest three vets and ask if anyone brought in an injured cat of her description in the past 3 days and leave your contact info.

Go DOWN to the shelter and animal control and physically look through their animals, the description in their computers may not match yours and the last thing you need is for her to be euthenized after the hold period is up.

Post flyers on trees. Put out a food and water bowl. Call her.

You should be worried. Cats usually come in during the day to eat. Also cats don't stay outside for even a whole day without coming in to eat. Start looking and put up signs and/or posters. Also ask your neighbors if they have seen your cat and if they saw your cat ask them when. Usually that will give you a better idea where she is now.
