My cat has a cut on its paw and it smells like a smelly fish. Is that a good thing...

My cat did this one. She got a hold of my shaving razor and sliced her pad off. I rinsed it with luke warm water and put neosprene on it. My vet suggested that.

Healed up quickly.

I hope your kitty is ok.

...and how can I treat it? Also, is a good thing to put neosporin or ointment on the paw and bandage it up?

It sounds like it is infected. That's whats causing the odor. You could put Neosporin on it and bandage it. I don't think your cat will like the bandage much tho. They don't like anything on their paws.

It might be a good idea to get your cat checked out. If the paw is infected they will give you an antibiotic for the infection.

How long has the cut been there? Any bad odor from a wound is indicative of an infection. If your cat's cut is infected enough to smell bad, you need to seek treatment from a veterinarian. Please don't attempt to treat this at home as you may inadvertently make it worse.

Cats don't smell like fish. They smell like cats.

If it's on his fur, sponge bathe him. If it's in his skin or excrement, go to the vet.

Clean his paw with warm water. You can apply neosporin(the clear, yellow-ish one, not the cream), but wrap it in gauze and medical tape so he doesn't lick it off and ingest it. Try not to get the tape on his fur, and don't wrap it too tightly or you can cut off circulation.

If the wound smells you need to go to the Vet to make sure it isn't infected. They will either give or suggest to you something to put on it that is made for cats. I think neosporin is supposed to be a human med, I wouldn't put anything on my cat that wasn't made for cats or my Vet said "go ahead". The cat could easily tear off the bandage and end up licking the paw (a natural instict) and ingest the ointment. Call your Vet and see what they say and take it from there. Good Luck :-)
