My car stays in high rpm when on the freeway... any help?

I drive a 2004 Honda Civic EX Coupe 5-Speed. When i'm in 5th gear, which in the highest gear, on the freeway, it reaches almost 4k when i'm doing 78-80mph... i can almost hear the V-Tec about to kick in.

Even at 60mph, my rpm is above 3k... Doesn't my car eat up a ton of gas if I drive around 3.5k - 4k rpm? and will it wear out the engine faster? I've heard honda engines are designed like this, but i would like more opinions on this. Thanks all.
 
my Accord 1.8 does the same, 4000rpm at 80ish. then the V-Tec kicks in. don't know about civics but V-tec kicks in at 4000 in Accords. and it gives be about 24mpg if i'm lucky. mostly around 20mpg.
The purpose of the V-Tec is for us to kick it in. if you wanted a car not to engage the Vtec you should have gone for a civic lsi.
It won't wear out the engine. The car was designed for this type of driving. if it wasn't, Honda would have engaged the Vtec at 2000 rpm.

It will drink more gas than i could probably guzzle beer on a crazy weekend. but its worth it....
 
thats where its supposed to be. if it was a v6 or v8 it would cruise at a lower rpm, but 4cyl typically cruise around 4k at 80ish. your vtec shouldnt come on til around 5k-5500 if i remember correctly. you dont need to worry about wearing out the engine, they are good for 400k miles and the gas just is what it is...the motor sips fuel, my motor guzzles it.
