White smoke out the exhaust pipe so I am thinking head gasket but why would it stop cooling and why would the head gasket go bad, is it possible that the thermostat is what caused it or the water pump? It is a Toyota 4-runner 1995 136,000 miles but just had engine replaced 2 years ago because my mom let it run out of oil, so new engine is more like 90,000 miles, all new hoses and belts. I called a mechanic and was told it would be about $1000.00 to fix and KBB is $4000.00 so I am thinking of fixing it and selling it, because I have a 2005 mini van, and we don't really need 2 vehicles. I don't want to put $1000.00 into it if it could be something else. Please help.

Sometimes they just go bad (leak). There's no explanations. It is like your sink leaking, it just does.

NO. It is the head gasket. You got white smoke.

Good luck...

i wish i could tell it was something else but i think you are right, it's the head gasket. i don't know why, but why does a light bulb blow out? the million dollar question. Low coolant? warped head? did the engine sit around without fluids in it?
