My car just threw a rod and now it wont start. It acts like it wants too. Why am

I not getting any spark? I have gotten regular oil changes. My last oil change was done tuesday. Three days later, Friday morning. I began hearing a tick tick tick sound as i accelerated. Very quiet. I dropped it off at a shop. They said it sounds like im throwing a rod and that was it. wish they would have told me it wasnt safe to continue to drive it because i could make something worse. But when i left from that shop it was a louder knock than what I heard earlier that morning. Saturday comes and im driving it to another shop and the car does its last knock and cuts out. I try to crank it over but its not getting any spark. Why?? Another question. If I've kept up on the maintenance and oil changes, how could this happen? Is there anyway I can hold The shop that did my oil change Tuesday accountable?
