I have a 1998 Chevy Lumina, and I recently inherited a Volfenhag 12" in an enclosed plexy glass box, with a 500w alpine amp. The Volfenhag is duel coiled or whatever, where the wire INSIDE the box, going into the actual sub, is 2 wires that merge into 1 fat wire.
Okay so I had my friend, whom I trust dearly with all my car audio installations, install my indash for me (its the only part of car audio installation that I have trouble with) and I installed the subs and amp.
After we were finished, it throbbed so hard i felt a nose bleed coming on. I was driving down the road bumping feeling like a badass, then about 5 minutes down the road the sub cut out and I smelled smoke. I knew what happened and I was devistated. I popped my trunk and all too expectantly saw my brand new sub smoking.
I went home and piddled around with it and got it to where it would work, BUT only to about volume 8 (which is barely audible) and then the sub would cut out. I'm guessing it's only half blown.
But here's where my story turns drastic, I bought another Pioneer 12" shallow mount (yeah..I know..) and put it in the box and wired it all up...But since it was not duel coiled or whatever, I had to wire the wires from inside the box to the sub all funky. BUT, it worked fine and was surprisingly loud.
So I'm driving down the road and 5 minutes later...you guessed it! Smelled smoke, sh*t my pants and bit my tongue till I made it home.
Same conclusion, half blown - In my theory.
Does anyone have the slightest clue what's going on? Is there a wiring fault somewhere? I didn't have any of the subs turned up even remotely loud, and my amp was EQ'd low-mid, not even nearly as high as it would have to be to blow a sub.
I'm about to buy a 12" Rockford Fosgate Punch, and I want to do everything I can to make sure it doesnt suffer the same fate, so I'm researching all I can before I install it.
I have thought about paying $100 for professional installation in hopes that they would fix whatever ailment my wiring has suffered, IF that's even the problem.
Does anyone have any suggestions?
